Is there any difference between a domain name registration costing a few dollars and one that is a lot more expensive? The answer is not as straight forward as you might think.
There should be no real difference in the registration service provided the registration is done through an accredited registrar. If that is so, then why are there such big differences in domain prices?
The sites that offer a really cheap price are probably not being honest with you. What they offer is usually an introductory price. They often lose money on your first year registration. Next year when you have to renew, the price is always higher. This tactic of being cheapest in the market is their way of attracting customers
. The low prices in their advertising gets people to their sites.
Their hope is that in 12 months, your renewal will be processed automatically and that you will not notice that there is a significant difference between the price that hooked you to use their service and the price you pay to stay.
As a customer, I resented the idea that the cheap price was only offered to new customers.
Fortunately, some domain name registration services have decided to take a different tack. They prefer to offer you a genuine price. When you renew next year, there will be no surprises - the renewal price and registration price are always the same. An honest price and value added services is what is offered to customers.
I am a firm believer that the prices you offer to customers need to be competitive. However, price should not be the only criteria by which a customer chooses which businesses they deal with. When you see a cheap offer, always check what you are actually getting. Make sure you know what the renewal price will be next year and the real cost of that domain name.
