Deciding whether you want an add-on domain or a sub-domain is not a matter of preference - it depends on what is most suitable for YOUR needs. Choosing to go the wrong route can cost you dearly. I'm going to tell you how you can establish what your needs actually are - and how you can meet them...

A Sub Domain will be your domain name without www and with .nameofsubdomain added.

An Add-On Domain will be completely different ie it will just look like an ordinary domain name.

Really, a lot depends on WHY you want another domain name.

If you just want to divide your online business into separate areas within the same niche a sub-domain will meet your needswebsite domain registrar. It's a good option if you're on a tight budget as it will cost you nothing. However, it doesn't look as good. People often find sub-domains confusing and hard to remember as they don't begin with www.

If you want to set-up another website in a different niche or a micro niche, an add-on domain will be better for branding reasons because it can be called something completely different to your Primary Domain. You will have to register this add-on domain name - it will cost you approx $10 p.a.

With an add-on domain, you have one user name and password to access your primary domain and all add-ons. Add-ons are set up in their own folder under the public_html folder of the Primary Domain. The index.html (home page) for each add-on domain would then go inside the folder setup for that domain.

For sub-domains you also use the same user name and password as your original domain. Sub domains are set up in their own folder in the public_html folder of the original domain.

Right! You have now have the skill of knowing what type of domain is best for you - and you know how they both work. This skill will enable you to make a decision based on what is right for YOUR business.
